It has been a terrific start to the WTA season in Brisbane. Four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka successfully made her return to tennis on the second day. There are four second-round matches scheduled in Brisbane on Day 3, with Victoria Azarenka one of the players in action. Which players do you think will win?

WTA Brisbane Day 3 Predictions

Sofia Kenin vs Arina Rodionova

Head-to-head: First meeting

There were some very hopeful signs for Kenin last season. Many had written off the former Australian Open champion after the struggles she went through. However, she managed positive results like beating Coco Gauff at Wimbledon and reaching the final in San Diego. Her ranking is far superior to Rodionova, but the Australian played superbly to beat Martina Trevisan in the first-round. She looked inspired in that match, and upsets often happen early in the weeks of the season. Rodionova might pull off another shock in Brisbane.
Prediction: Rodionova in 3

Victoria Azarenka vs Anna Kalinskaya

Head-to-head: Kalinskaya 1-0 Azarenka

Azarenka had a bit of a mixed season in 2023. There were solid victories, but also many tight defeats suffered by the two-time Grand Slam champion. Kalinskaya impressed in her comprehensive win against American Bernara Pera in the opening round, and beat Azarenka in their one meeting on clay. However, Azarenka will be a much more difficult matchup on a hard court. The Belarusian will not give Kalinskaya the same amount of time with her shots, which she thrives on. Azarenka’s clean hitting to take her through in straight sets.
Prediction: Azarenka in 2

Veronika Kudermetova vs Anna Karolina Schmiedlova

Head-to-head: Schmiedlova 1-0 Kudermetova

Kudermetova had a positive 2023, and should have aims to go even higher in 2024. She begins her season against an opponent she lost her only meeting too. Schmiedlova’s opening round triumph against Caroline Dolehide was somewhat scrappy, but she still did well to recover from a set down. It could be an awkward match at times for Kudermetova. However, the conditions in Brisbane should suit the higher-ranked Kudermetova more, and help her to get the win.
Prediction: Kudermetova in 3

Mirra Andreeva vs Liudmila Samsonova

Head-to-head: First meeting

Andreeva’s rise at Wimbledon was one of the biggest stories in tennis last year. The 16-year-old’s progress will continue to dominate tennis headlines for the next decade and beyond. She started the season very strongly against fellow young talent Diana Shnaider in the first round in Brisbane. The power and talent of Samsonova presents an interesting challenge for the teenager. Expect this to be a close battle. Overall, the experience and toughness of Samsonova may just about have the edge, especially if the match goes to a third set in hot Brisbane conditions.
Prediction: Samsonova in 3
