Todd Bowles confirms a startling revelation regarding Tom Brady during Bucs' Super Bowl run
Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers had a special run in 2020.  With Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski on board, the Bucs ended a streak of futility on multiple levels, making the playoffs for the first time in 13 years while winning their first Super Bowl (and playoff game, for that matter) for the first time since Super Bowl XXXVII.

One might have assumed that a vocal Brady, firing up his team in the huddle pregame was a routine part of that winning formula that the Bucs found during that magical season.

Well, it was, but only for one game, according to then-defensive coordinator and current head coach Todd Bowles.  Bowles went on the Rich Eisen Show on Tuesday and confirmed that Brady did not address the team in pregame until the team was getting ready to take on the Chiefs in Super Bowl LV.

"Tom was more of a leader out of the huddle," Bowles said.  "He ran the offense, and he led the offense.  There were guys that spoke, but when Tom speaks before a game, everybody's going to listen because he's a man of few words in that category.  He'd rather go by actions.  But when he spoke, everybody listened to a tee, and they followed the assignment."

Eisen previously found out about Brady not addressing the team pregame from one of Brady's teammates in Lavonte David, who went on Eisen's show last week.  David said Brady didn't talk pregame all season until the Super Bowl, which befuddled Eisen

"I just remember Tom didn't talk all season. Pregame speeches and stuff like that.  Not all season.  And then we were in the locker room getting ready to come out, and what better guy to have speak to us than Tom?  He came in the middle and the stuff that he said, just kind of like fired everybody up and it gave us all a ton of confidence."

So what exactly did Brady say in that moment?

"Moments like this will never be forgotten if you win this game," David recounted.  "You're going down in history.  Your last name will be remembered forever.  You win this game, your family will be remembered forever.  And just the battle you went [through] with those guys, your teammates.  You have this personal connection, this personal bond for the rest of your life.  When you think about it, you build brotherhoods with guys, and that's stuff that you want to be a part of with those guys."

It's no wonder the Buccaneers came out and absolutely crushed the Chiefs 31-9, giving Patrick Mahomes the only blemish of his career in the Super Bowl.  With that kind of pregame speech, it's understandable why the Bucs were able to put forth one of the greatest performances in the game's history.

It's just amazing what all they were able to accomplish when Brady didn't speak.  When you're the greatest player to ever put on a pair of football cleats, you don't really have to say anything at all to gain the utmost respect from your peers.
